The Switch in Time web site (www.switchintime.com) has some excellent free Macintosh software for use by / with pupils with special educational needs.
KidBook is a very nice multi-media publishing system that can be used to create talking books. Graphics and text can be imported easily into a ‘page’ structure and there are a number of options available for reading text back - word by word, sentence by sentence, or by clicking on individual words that a pupil may find difficult.
Simple Script is designed to help make dramatic performances more accessible for both performers and audience members. It can be used to ‘caption’ a performance and can also help people using a communication aid to participate in a performance.
Switch Hitter is a nice baseball simulator for switch users – if you can ignore the US cultural aspects! It is possible to vary the speed of the game to allow for different levels of switch expertise among the players, while it can encourage participation and turn-taking skills in the players.
The site also includes Clickit! overlays for a number of books, switch-accessible bingo, a wordsearch program and a switch-accessible CD jukebox.
