The Conference Aims and Objectives:
The Naace Primary Community Conference is Naace’s major annual conference aimed at its Primary Community. Open to Naace members, sponsoring partners and non members, it brings together colleagues from all over the UK and beyond, to network, share best practice and exchange ideas.
We have a rich and varied programme of hands on activities and presentations and we are looking forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new friends in the course of a lively and stimulating couple of days.

The Conference:
The conference begins on the afternoon of Friday 25th November 2005 and events on the Friday evening will be held at the Edinburgh Conference Centre located at Heriot Watt University on the outskirts of Edinburgh. There is a limited amount of accommodation available on the Heriot Watt campus. Workshops and presentations on Saturday 26th November will be held at the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh near the centre of the city. The delegate pack will contain the relevant campus plans, road maps and details of transport from Heriot Watt to Moray House.

Following on from a highly successful initial year of a four year FLaT funded pilot, Andrew will provide an insight into the film-making activities of 210 Angus youngsters, the impact the creation and analysis of film had on their language work and a plethora of other curricular areas, and share his experience of hosting the BAFFIES (Brechin Awards For Films In Educational Settings) with Brian Cox as the star guest.

10.10 – 15.15 Andrew Gallagher, Angus Digital Media Centre
Spielberg, Lucas, Polanski - or just someone who fancies making a movie? This workshop will allow the participants to work from scratch to producing a short film in just one day. Making use of a range freely available downloaded video clips the participants will adopt the role of sound engineers and directors then finally working together as an editing team, each group shall create a visual masterpiece to be showcased at the end of the conference. All that is needed is imagination, team spirit and a lack of inhibition ....who knows what blockbuster will come of this! The completed movie masterpieces will be premiered at the showcase at the end of the afternoon.

The creative use of word processors and other commonly available software can do wonders for pupils of all abilities – but especially those who struggle to write. The session will pay particular attention to simple practical activities which are within the capability of all teachers to deliver, as well as approaches where a little writing can make a lot of difference. Trevor Millum is the author of a number of publications on English and ICT and has just completed a book for Barrington Stoke which focuses on lesson activities for less able pupils which involve the use of ICT to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening,

This hands on practical workshop will give you the chance to use the small, lightweight and child-friendly Digital Movie Creator digital-video camera, some jointed toy figures, bundled video-editing software, and a generous helping of fun to create a stop-motion animated movie in half a day! Participants must attend either both sessions in the morning and in the afternoon.. The completed movie masterpieces will be premiered at the showcase at the end of the afternoon. .

Participants attending this workshop have the opportunity to explore a large, varied collection of ICT resources ranging from toasters, microwaves, dance mats to programmable buggies and trains. Consideration will be given as how to integrate ICT into the 3-5 Curriculum.
ii) Interactive Whiteboards: a multimedia resource for the classroom

i) ICT in the Early Years: ICT in Communication & Language
Susan Cunningham, Early years ICT Staff Tutor & Theresa Mungall, ICT Visiting Specialist
Participants in this workshop will make use of a variety of ICT resources to develop features of the Communication and Language aspect of the 3-5 curriculum. Opportunity will be given to experiment with digital still and video camera, electronic books, floor robots, interactive whiteboards etc to find out how these can be used effectively to promote language.
ii) Using ICT creatively with Children with Communication Difficulties

iii) Using Digital Photography and Video with Children with Physical Disabilities

This presentation will illustrate how Digital technology can raise standards of teaching and learning by providing children with opportunities to access and process their work through ICT. It will show how to open routes to learning that disabled children find difficult via “traditional” methods, especially in the areas of The Arts. This entertaining presentation will be of value to those working with children with disabilities but also of use to teachers new to film making and digital photography.
