    Introduction (5-14)

In Scotland guidelines offer a curriculum framework for all pupils. Technology can be of benefit not only as a tool for learning within 5-14 but to children under five years and beyond fourteen years of age. For this reason the age range 5-14 is an approximate chronological age.

Although 5 - 14 curriculum guidelines apply to all pupils, some will require the curriculum and its pace of delivery to be tailored towards their needs. To do this pathways through the guidelines can be devised using key concepts of:

    • Differentiation - the general approach to providing variation in teaching pace, content, level and method
    • Individualisation - the process of producing a curriculum matched to the special needs of an individual child
    • Adaptation - differentiation and individualisation may require a teacher to adapt the learning outcomes or attainment targets of the 5 - 14 curriculum
    • Enhancement - in some cases the curriculum will need to be enhanced to meet individual needs
    • Elaboration - for some children the advice on curriculum and assessment within the 5 - 14 programme is inappropriate, and additional learning outcomes, strands or attainment targets are required
