    Books for Older Students

It is an area of concern that most early level reading materials are geared to the 5-8 year old ('Infant') age group, whereas it is difficult to find anything suitable for students from older age groups.

Beginning readers in the upper primary, teenager, and adult age groups need exactly the same type of simple language and restricted but recurring vocabulary as little children - for example one or two lines of text (around 10 words) per page - but they need topics which are age- and interest- appropriate. They deserve and need the same high standard of attractive illustrations and interesting subject material as young children, but they need books which have a general 'look' that has 'street cred' and which will not be laughed at as 'babyish' by their siblings or peers.

Recognising that we still have a long way to go in addressing these issues, this section offers a few pointers towards possible sources of resources for older readers with limited literacy.
