    Introduction (Higher Education)

Students with disabilities in Further and Higher education can benefit from the use of specialist ICT in many ways. For example:

      • Students with physical difficulties may require special keyboards or access tools (see CALL’s Special Access Technology book)

      • Students with reading and writing difficulties may find text-to-speech useful for studying, and spellcheckers or speech recognition, for example, for writing. (See CALL’s Supportive Writing Technology book, and the Speech Recognition Resouces.)

      • Students with a visual impairment may use CCTV equipment, screen readers or screen magnification programs.

The TechDis website is the best place to start if you are interested in this area, and contains a database of equipment, articles and materials, and  links to useful sites.

The Disability Office supports students with disabilities studying at the University of Edinburgh, and the web site has information on legislation, policy and sources of funding for purchasing equipment.
